Islam and images: a complex relation

Islam is often perceived in the West as a civilization without images and even iconoclastic. But can this really be stated so radically? For the fourth part of the online series Critical Thinkin within Islam, Arabist and art historian Silvia Naef goes back to the founding text of Islam to explore where this prejudice comes from. In the text accompanying the lecture, she retraces the history of the relationship between Islam and images from the great pre-modern Muslim empires to the appearance of "modern imagery" from the 19th century onwards.
