Ariella Aïsha Azoulay on Unlearning Imperial Violence

video

In this academic conversation, professor Azoulay takes us on a travel originally from the French ‘travail’; painful and laborious effort, including that of displacement. She takes us on a travel through the imperial writing of modern history. Azoulay’s work invites the reader to revisit how the destruction of indigenous worlds on the African continent (referencing histories a.o. in Algeria and the D.R. Congo) was foundational to the construction of imperial worlds governed by colonial states such as France, Belgium and Israel.

The conversation is part of Travelling [fractured] Sources, a two-day program on 29 and 30 November 2023, featuring also the film screening of Azoulay's 'The World Like a Jewel in the Hand' at Beursschouwburg.
