What happens to stories that are not allowed to be told? To memories that are suppressed? Or to knowledge that has never been considered valuable?
In this edition of Mindblowers, VUB and KVS bring together artists and researchers from Belgium and Latin America around the theme of ghost memory: stories, people and knowledge that have been forgotten, erased or pushed to the margins, yet have never completely disappeared.
Through personal stories, artistic projects and academic research, the speakers explore what endures when people are forced to flee, when histories are forgotten, or when certain voices remain unheard. You will hear about Syrian journalists continuing their work in exile, a woman who was abducted as a baby during the Argentine dictatorship, forms of knowledge that have been pushed to the margins for generations, and artists imagining alternative narratives about the past and the future.
Expect an evening of art, research and personal testimonies in which ghost memories take shape: things that seemed forgotten, yet never truly disappeared.
With contributions by Claudix Vanesix, Claudia Poblete, Yazan Badran, Adriana Moreno Cely and Laura Vandewynckel.

Proximamente Festival brings together artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and their diasporas. This year’s theme, ghost memory, explores how erased, interrupted or forgotten histories return to the present and shape how we imagine the future.
Yazan Badran is an assistant professor in international media and communication studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and a researcher at the Echo research group. His research focuses on the intersection between media, journalism and politics particularly in the MENA region and within its exilic and diasporic communities. He was previously a Junior Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) (2022-2025) as well as a PhD fellow of the FWO (2016-2020). He has a MSc in Communication Studies from the VUB (2015), and holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from the Nagoya Institute of Technology in Japan (2013). He has been a visiting scholar at different institutions including Kadir Has University (Istanbul, Turkey), and Centre d’Etudes Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT–Tunis, Tunisia).
Adriana Moreno Cely is an activist-researcher dedicated to exploring collaborative and decolonial approaches to foster sustainable, equitable, and inclusive futures. She seeks to connect different knowledge systems to address the rapidly changing and unpredictable world and to navigate the polycrisis collectively. Adriana highlights the importance of recognizing Indigenous and local knowledge as essential for creating new pathways toward epistemic, social, racial, and environmental justice. She asserts that decolonizing academia is vital, particularly for transdisciplinary collaborations that aim to treat all knowledge systems equally. Her advocacy promotes decentralization, de-privileging, and diversification of knowledge creation, along with the dismantling of artificial disciplinary and knowledge-system boundaries.
Laura Vandewynckel studied Language and Literature at Ghent University and dramatic and audiovisual arts at RITCS School of Arts Brussels. Her stop-motion film Paradise (2014), a lighthearted yet critical reflection on ‘ethical’ tourism, was selected for La Cinef Cannes and TIFF. Thanks to the Sifnos Award La Cinef, she created the short film Pharmakos (2017) on the Greek island of Sifnos. The film documents a collective reenactment of the Greek Pharmakos ritual with the island’s inhabitants. Her animated short film Le Crépuscule (2023) explores the effect of nightmare news on the collective mind and is currently touring international film festivals. Laura has also written and directed several theatrical plays, including A modest contribution (2018), about good intentions with bad consequences, and the participatory performance Stick Together (2021), inspired by stick games, dances, and fights from around the world. Her most recent production is Lost in LEO (2023), a puppet performance about impact and climate change from the perspective of space debris. She teaches Concept & Scenario and Transversal Atelier at RITCS, and is currently completing a PhD on the potential of automata as activist and therapeutic tools.
Claudix Vanesix will share a lecture performance called Xenocene: A Manifesto in Motion."Xenocene" challenges human dominance over meaning by juxtaposing human “reality” with the "xenoreality" produced by an AI system. Is the world we perceive the only one that exists? Or merely one perspective among many, entangled in a post-human ontology where non-human intelligences also claim agency?
Claudia Pobletes Claudia is the second show of the trilogy about History and Identity, made by La Conquesta del Pol Sud. Claudia Victoria Poblete Hlaczik lives in Buenos Aires, she works as an IT technician and is passionate about science fiction. Claudia lives a ‘normal’ life but this appearance hides a very particular background. This young woman was educated in the values of the military environment until, when she was 21, she discovered that her real parents were ‘desaparecidos’ and that she lived an invented life. Her case led to an important turning point in Argentina because it meant the beginning of the end of the military leadership’s impunity. Claudia’s life experience, which is communicated by herself on stage, is the primary material this theatrical documentary is based on. What do some individuals’ experiences have to do with us? What is the meaning of words like revolution, memory, and education today?
Claudia Alba Ortuño works at the VUB Foundation. Originally from Bolivia, she has conducted research on entrepreneurship in vulnerable communities and is active in theatre as a member of Tramedy. During Mindblowers, she hosts the event and helps connect the different stories, perspectives and conversations throughout the evening.
Junior Akwety is a Belgian-Congolese multidisciplinary artist working across music, theatre, and artistic coaching. As a singer, actor, and coach, he combines performance, artistic guidance, and collective creation. His work explores memory, music, movement, and community, creating spaces for connection and artistic freedom.
