Lecture by Joes Segal on the paradoxical relations between art and politics.
Over the past two centuries, artists have regularly engaged in war and struggle, both in support and in a critical sense. But artists are by no means always in control of the interpretation of their own work. Critics, intellectuals, historians, journalists and politicians formed their own reading of visual art, following their own agenda in times of war and crisis. Based on a series of case studies (the First World War, the Third Reich and the Cold War) Joes Segal will show us how these dynamics functioned and to what paradoxical relations between art and politics they could lead.
