UPCOMING EVENTS:
FREE livestreaming of TedXBrussels from Bozar. Speakers from all over the world share their ideas or projects. This year's topic: EX NIHILO.
Politicians and economists have long had the tendency to only see the positive effects of globalization. Yet, globalization has also led to an overuse of finite natural resources, an increase of carbon dioxide emissions, major job losses in European countries, etc.
For the first time in recent decades, the idea of an ever-increasing global trade is questioned. To secure a sustainable future, focusing on locally rooted economic structures and on local manufacturing is crucial.
Nano fillers and nano additives have a high significance in the plastics industry. This rapidly expanding field is generating many new materials with novel properties for a wide range of applications. This workshop gives a state-of-the-art of nanocomposites. What are the advantages and challenges for the plastics industry and for future research? What is their effect on recycling?
Invited Talk on innovation by Crosstalks Director Marleen Wynants at the occasion of the booklaunch of DesignX50 in Kortrijk.
PAST EVENTS:
By 2020 all EU-countries should be able to recycle 50% of their household waste. Household plastics and packaging are the biggest sources of plastic waste. How can we reduce that waste? Is optimizing the recycling of plastic the only way to prevent it from ending up in the oceans or in landfills? Is the reuse of plastic bottles preferable to recycling them?
This workshop zooms in on the technical state of the art and the major challenges for waste legislation and management in Belgium, in the UK and at EU level.
The world is changing rapidly. Creativity is a key component in a society that has entered a post-industrial era. To solve the contemporary problems like aging, globalization and technocracy, contemporary and innovative responses are needed. The aim of the Human Sciences is to transform students into socially alert citizens who may come up with some solutions to the current crisis in society.
This workshop focuses on primary prevention and on how much effort a society can ask of its citizens to protect them from the diseases of old age. Two international experts will share their thoughts on the biology of aging and on how to boost elderly people before they slide off to frailty. After zooming in on the specific case of Brussels, an open discussion will be held on the role of prevention in the field of healthy aging and quality of life.

Ada Lovelace? Caroline Herschel? Grace Hopper? Barbara McClintock? Elizabeth Byanjeru Rubauhayo? These names do not sound familiar? Well, next time they ask you about female scientists, there is no longer an excuse that Marie Curie is the only name you can come up with.

The use of plastics is a complex thing. Over the years it has brought us many advantages. Plastics are cheap to produce, strong, easy to be moulded, resistant to water, odors and bacteria, light in weight… Yet, their popularity has also led to a rise in plastic waste which causes many environmental problems.
The use of biopolymers and biodegradable plastics could be part of the solution, yet a severe focus on the prevention of waste, the re-use and recycling and recovery of plastics is perhaps even more important.

This year our theme is Bits, Atoms, Neurons, Genes (or BANG BANG! as we're calling it). The digital world and the real world are interconnected like never before. You can send off online for a personal genome readout and control physical objects with your mind. Computer thinking is driving medicine, music and play. With brain-computer interfaces now used in nuclear power stations and bio hackers doing lab biology in their garages, BANG BANG is a concept whose time has come. BANG BANG means the evolving mesh of ideas and practices, a rich mix of citizens, scientists and culture.

Social media present an exciting platform for people to interact. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. are considered as public spaces. However, these spaces are controlled by private investors out for profit. Before turning into a digital shopping mall, the Internet and social media started out as a source of knowledge, a new way to share and spread information. Yet, social networking sites blur the lines between personal and professional behavior. Whose information are you sharing anyway? Does the technology make us more conscious of our actions? Does the fact that our ministers tweet, enhances our trust in the policymaking process? This CAMPUSTALKS addresses the ethical challenges of social media for researchers, journalists, artists, law and health practitioners, policymakers, employers and employees, educators and students, parents and kids.
For decades, we have shamefully abused our cities and waterways. Urbanization, the increase of population, and climate change have forced us to find a sustainable way to develop the available spatial resources to their full potential. Over 50% of the global population currently live in cities and the vast majority are located in waterfront areas. Therefore we need to go beyond reducing environmental harm and try to find new approaches to littoral and urban development.

While the focus of universities used to be mainly on research and education, today’s interest is broadened to cover society’s necessities and to transform knowledge into economically interesting products. By implementing entrepreneurial skills in curricula, universities establish a competitive environment that stimulates business development and the creation of spin-offs. As technical innovation has become the main force for competitiveness and as universities are getting more recognized as the motors for innovation, it seems that the collaboration between industry and universities can create a win-win situation for both. It allows universities to target their research to society’s actual needs, and industry to have direct access to the most recent high-level research.
Plastics have become the key drivers of innovation. Whether it is plastics from petrochemicals, bio-plastic or bio-degradable plastics, the application areas are boosting: the automotive field, rail, transport, defense and aerospace, medical and healthcare, electrical and electronics, telecommunication, building and infrastructure, furniture and tools, etc. And then home based 3D printing has not even started! Plastics enhance the quality, comfort and safety of modern lifestyles for people of all income groups. Yet, their impact on the environment and on human health is an important issue.
Although major efforts and breakthrough research projects have been set up by academic and industrial researchers during the past years, an open exchange of best practices and innovative solutions between all stakeholders is not a given thing. And that is exactly where CROSSTALKS comes in: through its bottom-up approach and interdisciplinary networking events CROSSTALKS aims at the development of new insights, projects and partnerships with regard to the sustainable production and end-of-life treatment of plastics, in order to create a pre-trajectory for future policy making and to indicate probing issues for future research.
In a well defined series of internationally directed workshops and from different disciplinary perspectives – industry, topnotch research, policymaking, design and art – we want to zoom in on production and recycling issues, and consider regional and global regulations and best practices with regard to environmental and health safety.
The exact choice of the topics is to be decided by an accompanying committee consisting of partners and an inter-university representation of disciplines.

In addition CROSSTALKS presents its 5th book Bridges over Troubled Waters in the presence of the authors the archeologist Dries Tys (VUB - Department of Archaeology and Art History) and landscape architect Bas Smets (Bureau Bas Smets).
Although policy makers seem to believe that applied research is the key to economic growth and wellbeing, major innovation is rarely possible without prior generation of new knowledge founded on basic research.
In this Campustalks, the possible balance and rightful financing of basic and applied research is explored by academics from different disciplines.
EXCLUSIVE WORKSHOP (max 30 participants)
Medical innovation can be a win-win for all the involved stakeholders: industry, research and development, authorities and patients. What is the contribution of Belgium to innovation with regard to Europe 2020? What is the current situation in Flanders? In Wallonia? What are the strong elements? What are weak elements? Who are the involved actors? What are the financing mechanisms? What are the expected results? What is the expected added value? Can other/new financingmechanisms be linked to it?
Aimed at debate: What are the objectives? What are the EU tendencies? Where does Belgium want to go? What are the boundary conditions and necessary incentives?
The 5th CROSSTALKS publication Troubled Waters will be presented on Tuesday May 8th during the Aquafit4Use End Congress and the i-SUP2012 - Innovation for Sustainable Production Conference in Bruges.
Science is commonly viewed as a mere cognitive act, while art is said to be born out of our imagination. But is it really that simple? In this Campustalks specialists from different disciplines will show you how both worlds are connected and can benefit from a mutual inspiration.
On 20 December 2010, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on culture and development, which emphasizes the important contribution of culture for sustainable development and for the achievement of national and international development objectives, including the Millennium Development Goals. In this Campustalks, speakers from different disciplines will convince you of the importance of international cooperation.

There is a need for a transparent and evidence-based approach towards orphan drug pricing and reimbursement. Core issues re the access to orphan drugs are whether registration and reimbursement are evidence based and whether societal considerations can improve the decision making process re the availability of orphan drugs. A transparent approach should be targeted at demonstrating the relative effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and economic viability of orphan drugs with a view to informing pricing and reimbursement decisions.
During this workshop, we want to get an insight in the kind of evidence we have at the moment, the kind of evidence we would like to have and ways to improve the transparency on the pricing and reimbursement.

In the past, the focus of sustainable visions was in most of time on the energy sector and on efforts to mitigate climate change. More recently water and water research have become a major element on the political, academic and corporate agenda.
The management of water and water-related issues are becoming central to sustainable adaptive actions. Hence Leuven.Inc and CROSSTALKS join their interdisciplinary and network forces to highlight emerging technologies and new challenges in water research, to reinforce common objectives for all the concerned stakeholders and to stimulate new alliances.

The change is so big that nobody knows if it is Africa, America, Europe or Asia that will get the vision first. Everything is open. A sustainable society is possible.

The idea is to have an open and constructive workshop with all stakeholders on the opportunities, expectancies, results and future challenges of Health Care Contracts. The workshop itself will be invitation only since we want to focus on deepgoing discussions and enable all the participants time and space to reflect and discuss the items and issues presented by the invited speakers.

On June 8th, under presidence of vice-rector Rosette S’Jegers, the VUB industry network zoomed in the relevance and efficiency of existing Early Warning Information Systems with special focus on the management of security and supply chain management in the Belgian harbors, with as case study the harbor of Rotterdam. Again the open and constructive discussion revealed existing bottlenecks and the lack of transparancy between the different stakeholders.
The main message echoing during and after the seminar was the urgent need for more 'crosstalking' between technologists, engineers, social scientists, policymakers and artists to evolve towards secure, reliable and invisible ICT. The seminar was attended by 70 participants from corporate, cultural, policymaking and the academic contexts.
