After the successful launch of the third CROSSTALKS book 'In Sickness and in Health' - CROSSTALKS launched the follow-up project on health "Optimal Partnerships through Transparency" on June 19th. The aim of the Atomium Session "Navigating the Complex Nature of Energy Efficiency" on May 14th was to uncover the interdependencies, opportunities and trade-offs with regard to policymaking and the corporate world with Wolfgang Eichhammer (Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation), Alain Vermeiren (Cisco Systems & CUD - Connected Urban Development) and Clive van Heerden (Philips Design). In the context of Charles Darwin's 200th birth date and 150 years after his book "On the Origins of Species", the second session of VUB CAMPUSTALKS wanted to make a true interdisciplinary contribution to Darwin's legacy.

 

 

 

On March 25th 2009 the kick-off of a new event format CAMPUSTALKS took place, aiming at enhance community building among the many institutions and people associated with VUB and beyond...

 

 

 

The book release event of CROSSTALKS' 3rd publication In Sickness and in Health on March 24th presented the particular needs, challenges and aspirations, common aims and perspectives that emerged or were confirmed during the many CROSSTALKS interactions and workshops during the last 3 years.

 

Navigating from energy-efficiency investments in the private-public domain (Catherine Cooremans, University of Geneva), a mathematical model of consumer attitude (Jean Paul Van Bendegem, philosopher and mathematician, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) to devolution in energy policy (Iain Todd, AREG, Scotland), this workshop on "Energy Efficiency: Paradigm Shifts in Innovation" on Feb 11th deliberately took some random walks from the beaten track to innovation...

http://pechakucha.architempo.net/ On January 16, CROSSTALKS organised a Pecha Kucha session at the occasion of the annual Conference on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection, aiming at bridging the gap between policymakers, academics, practitioners and activists.

The Future of Medication series concluded with a workshop on “The thin line between promotion, information and deontological code" on Nov 18th 2008. Keynote speaker Isidro Aguillo talked about the parameters, risks and challenges of rankings and quality labels for hospitals and medical websites, Marc Bogaerts elaborated on the difficult and sensitive relationship between physicians and the pharmaceutical industry. On Nov 12th 2008, CROSSTALKS launched its new project "Energy Efficiency: Facing the Facts and Learning to Cooperate" with a first science & industry lunch. The cross-disciplinary procedure - ranging from evolutionary biology, physics, engineering and outer space programs to economy, art, design & architecture - must allow all stakeholders to interact with each other through open dialogues, in order to develop a long term vision on the necessity of energy efficiency at any level of a global and ecological oriented society. Semantic Interfaces and Key Opportunities of S€PA: During two science & industry lunches in May and June 2008, CROSSTALKS and EDS tackled the issue of the financial supply chain in the post-SEPA era: first from a more technical perspective aiming at more efficiency and cost reduction, secondly from the perspective of the business and consumers and their expectancies in post-SEPA and a cashless society aiming at a more efficient bank-to-customer integration. On April 26th, an exclusive mixture of academic and corporate researchers, curators, and business leaders filled the library of Namahn in Brussels, to celebrate the release of the 2nd CROSSTALKS book "Brave New Interfaces". The launch program consisted of an invited talk by one of Belgium’s most creative entrepreneurs, Jan Kriekels, followed by a demonstration of the new DECAP sound and orchestration by Walter Hus and an audio-visual performance by Angelo Vermeulen. Between October 2006 and January 2008, CROSSTALKS is organizing a series of conferences and workshops on the Future of Medication in a Patient-Centered Health Care. Crucial in this project is the collaborative partnership and sharing of knowledge between academics, industry, physicians, pharmacists, patients, sick funds and insurances, health and social care organizations and policymakers.. CROSSTALKS Past Events | 2006

On June 8th, under presidence of vice-rector Rosette S’Jegers, the VUB industry network zoomed in the relevance and efficiency of existing Early Warning Information Systems with special focus on the management of security and supply chain management in the Belgian harbors, with as case study the harbor of Rotterdam. Again the open and constructive discussion revealed existing bottlenecks and the lack of transparancy between the different stakeholders. Read more...

 

On Thursday April 27th, CROSSTALKS launched its kick-off seminar on the theme Brave New Interfaces. The main message echoing during and after the seminar was the urgent need for more 'crosstalking' between technologists, engineers, social scientists, policymakers and artists to evolve towards secure, reliable and invisible ICT. The seminar was attended by 70 participants from corporate, cultural, policymaking and the academic contexts. Read more...

 

On february 21st, 2006, CROSSTALKS organised a Science & Industry Lunch on Early Warning Signals & Public Safety. Talks addressed future perspectives on national policy (Brice De Ruyver), challenges for one of Belgium's biggest risk companies BIAC (Luc Van den Bossche) and the urgent need for more corporate and private co-operation (Yvan De Mesmaeker). On the 3rd of February 2005, the first CROSSTALKS book “How open is the future?” was released in a co-organised day event "The Future of our Digital Commons" by CROSSTALKS and DISC and in the presence of about 60 participants coming from various universities (Solvay, KULEuven, UGent, Erasmus Hogeschool), from the industry (ICT, media) and from European, federal and regional policymakers. On Thursday the 11th of December 2003 Rector Ben Van Camp introduced the VUB CROSSTALKS network – initiated by VUB Vice Rector Research Jan Cornelis - for a public of about 200 people. As well students, VUB professors, industry people and representatives of political and non-profit organisations had gathered in Aula QA to listen to the opposing viewpoints and economical and social models associated with Free & Open Source Software and Proprietary Software.
